San Clemente advanced to Mohs tournament elite bracket semifinals, Huntington Beach won its bracket

San Clemente’s girls volleyball was shorthanded going into the Dave Mohs Memorial Tournament’s championship day Saturday at Edison High.

The Tritons did fine. They were the only Orange County team to advance to the semifinals of the tournament’s elite Division 1 Gold Bracket. They lost in two sets to eventual-champion Lakewood.

Missing from the San Clemente roster were junior outside hitter Lily Dwinell, who was playing with a Team USA age-group team, and kills leader Abigail Brown, a senior middle blocker who recently suffered a concussion when crashing into a teammate at practice.

The Tritons beat Newport Harbor on Saturday in the Division 1 Gold Bracket quarterfinals 23-25, 25-20 and 15-13, having advanced to that round be defeating San Juan Hills earlier that morning.

San Clemente senior opposite hitter Audrey Della Vedova was named to the Mohs all-tournament Division 1 team.

Newport Harbor beat Menlo in three sets in what amounted to the fifth-place match of the Division 1 Gold Bracket, although the Mohs tournament does not label it as such. The Sailors lost the first set 22-25 then won 25-20 and 15-10.

Huntington Beach won the Division 1 Silver Bracket championship, defeating Ontario Christian 25-16 and 25-20. The Oilers beat Beckman 25-23 and 25-11 in the bracket’s semifinals.

St. Margaret’s advanced to the Division 2 Gold Bracket championship match in which the Tartans lost to Upland 25-15 and 25-18. Monica Sele of St. Margaret’s was named to the all-tournament Division 2 team.

Laguna Hills defeated Foohill 25-17, 24-26 and 15-10 in the Division 2 Silver Bracket final.

Yorba Linda won the championship of the Division 2 Bronze Bracket with a 25-22, 22-25, 15-13 win over Woodbridge in the bracket final.
